1. What these technologies do
A cookie is a small value stored by your browser and sent with relevant requests to a website. Local storage keeps values in the browser that website scripts can read when you return. On Himstead, these technologies support form security, record your storage choice and, with permission, remember two modest reading preferences. They are not needed to create an account because the site has no reader accounts. Your choice on one browser does not automatically apply to another browser, device or browser profile.
2. Necessary contact session
The cookie named himstead_session is used on the contact and confirmation pages. It identifies a temporary server session supporting the form security token, submission checks and the distinction between a confirmed message and a direct visit to the confirmation URL. It does not contain the message text. It is marked HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax, and Secure when served over HTTPS, so browser scripts cannot read it and its use across sites is restricted. It has a browser-session lifetime, although browser session-restoration settings can affect when a session actually ends. The contact form needs this session to work.
3. Remembering your storage choice
The local-storage item himstead_consent records whether you selected all, partial or functional, together with an expiry value. It is retained for up to 180 days so that the site can respect your selection without asking on every page. This record does not contain your name, email address or enquiry. When it is missing, invalid or expired, the site asks you to choose again. Keeping a record that you declined optional storage is necessary to honour that decision; Functional therefore still saves the choice itself.
4. Accept All
Accept All records the all setting and enables both optional reading conveniences. The journal may remember the category you selected through himstead_topic. The site may also remember the most recently read guide through himstead_last_guide, allowing a continue-reading link on the homepage. These are local conveniences rather than a detailed reading history: the latter value represents one guide, not a log of every page visited. Choosing Accept All does not activate advertising, audience analytics, email subscriptions or permission to contact you for unrelated reasons.
5. Partial
Partial records the partial setting and permits himstead_topic, so the journal can restore your chosen category when you return. It does not permit the last-read guide value. If himstead_last_guide was previously present, switching to Partial removes it. This is a distinct setting with a narrower function than Accept All. You can still navigate to every guide and article normally, and the search field remains usable. The option is intended for readers who want a remembered journal view without retaining a guide-resume preference.
6. Functional
Functional records the functional setting and removes both optional items, himstead_topic and himstead_last_guide. The site will not save those preferences while that setting remains active. Necessary form-session behaviour and the record of your storage choice remain available. You can read all editorial content, use ordinary links, search the journal and submit an enquiry under this setting. Optional preference acceptance is not a condition of accessing the publication. This choice also does not remove records you already submitted through the contact form, which have a separate purpose and retention period.
7. Changing or withdrawing a choice
Select Cookie preferences in the footer to open the preferences window again. Choose any of the three settings to apply it immediately and close the window. Moving from Accept All to Partial removes the guide-resume value; moving to Functional removes both optional values. The change applies to this browser going forward and does not retrieve information already sent in a network request. You can also delete site data through your browser settings. After that deletion, a future visit will usually show the choice banner again.
8. Lifetimes and expiry
The choice record lasts up to 180 days. Optional preference use is tied to that choice: after expiry the site clears optional values and asks again when it next runs. Local storage does not have an automatic browser expiry timer like a dated cookie, so removal is checked by the site when you visit. Values may otherwise remain on an unused device until its browser data is cleared. Browser privacy settings, storage limits or private-browsing modes may remove values earlier. The necessary contact cookie follows the browser session rather than this 180-day preference period.
9. External fonts and styling
DM Sans and Fraunces are requested from Google Fonts. The main stylesheet and site JavaScript are hosted locally on himstead.info. Requests for the external fonts occur during page loading, before you choose optional reading preferences. The external font provider may receive request information, including your IP address and browser-related headers. Browser caching may retain copies of those files. The three buttons control Himstead’s optional local preferences; they do not function as a network firewall or promise to prevent all third-party resource requests.
10. What is not included
The website does not include advertising trackers, audience analytics scripts, social-media tracking pixels or embedded marketing video players. We do not add those technologies when you select Accept All. There are no payment-service storage items or reader sign-in identifiers. Ordinary external links can lead to services with their own storage practices; those services are not controlled by this preferences window. Our security request limits are maintained on the server and are distinct from a browser cookie. Their limited purpose and retention are explained in the Privacy Policy.
11. Browser controls and practical limitations
Most browsers let you inspect or delete cookies and local storage for an individual website. Blocking all storage can prevent the contact form from retaining its security session and may cause the choice banner to reappear. If optional storage is unavailable, you can continue reading without remembered preferences. On a shared device, another person using the same browser profile may see its remembered category or continue-reading link. Choose Functional or clear the website’s data if you do not want those conveniences to remain accessible in that profile.
12. Questions and policy updates
Himstead can be contacted at [email protected], +44 7943 190033, or Walker Memorial Hall, 18 Ampton Road, Birmingham B15 2UJ, United Kingdom. Enquiries are reviewed Monday–Friday, 09:00–17:00, UK local time, Europe/London. Tell us the browser and control involved if a preference does not work as described; do not send passwords or sensitive device data. We will update this policy if storage purposes change and request a new choice where necessary.
